Description
The 198x MIDI Interface by MANGOEST is a precision MIDI-to-CV converter designed to bridge the gap between modern MIDI controllers/sequencers and vintage or modern Buchla-format modular systems.
It features a high-resolution 12-bit DAC to ensure accurate tracking across multiple voltage standards, including the classic Buchla 1.2V/octave scale.
Interface Guide
1. Note Priority Switch
This 3-way toggle switch determines how the module handles multiple simultaneous MIDI notes (polyphonic input) when generating its monophonic CV outputs:
-
Last: The most recently played note takes precedence.
-
Highest: The highest-pitched note currently held takes precedence.
-
Lowest: The lowest-pitched note currently held takes precedence.
2. Timing Outputs
-
Clock: Outputs a 10V, 20ms pulse for every quarter note received via MIDI clock. The adjacent yellow LED provides visual tempo feedback.
-
Gate: A high 10V signal that stays active as long as any MIDI key is depressed.
-
Trig (Trigger): A 10V, 20ms pulse generated every time a new MIDI Note On message is received. The red LED indicates trigger activity.
3. Note CV Outputs (12-bit DAC)
The module provides three simultaneous outputs for pitch, allowing for easy integration with various oscillator standards:
-
Note 1V/oct: Standard Modern pitch scaling.
-
Note 1.2V/oct: Traditional Buchla pitch scaling.
-
Note 2V/oct: Alternative vintage scaling.
4. Expression & Performance CV
-
Pitchbend: Outputs a bipolar voltage (0.5V) controlled by the MIDI pitch wheel.
-
Velocity: Converts MIDI velocity (0–127) to a 0V to 8V CV signal.
-
CC (Control Change): Converts a specific MIDI CC message (default CC#1/Mod Wheel) to a 0V to 8V CV signal.
5. MIDI Ports
-
MIDI In: Connect your MIDI controller, sequencer, or DAW interface here.
-
MIDI Thru: Passes an exact copy of the MIDI data received at the “In” port to daisy-chain other MIDI devices.
